Protective Styles, why?

Hey guys, welcome back. As you can tell from the title and the image below, we’ll be exploring protective hairstyles and their importance. I’ll also be showing you some of my favorites.protectivestyles

Firstly, protective hairstyles are super cute!

Had to put that out there in case you thought you had to wear a helmet all day.

Madamenoire describes them as styles “that protects the ends of your hair, helping to decrease tangling, shedding and breakage”.

Here is a list of the benefits of protective styling:

  • it helps to seal the moisture in your hair preventing excessive drying
  • it keeps your ends hidden, reducing split ends

  • it reduces the tension on the scalp caused by constant grooming, improving hair growth
  • it reduces breakage caused by exposure to wind and humidity

An important thing to note is that protective styling can also allow you to transform the color of your hair without actually adding any chemicals to it. Awesome right? By simply purchasing some colored box braids you can sport a bright colorful do of your choice. The versatility these styles offer is a big plus.

Another benefit of protective styling is, the comfort it offers to the most sensitive areas of our heads, our edges and the middle of our scalp. Because these hairstyles are supposed to be done loosely so as to not pressure the scalp in any way, they reduce the tension and hold on the most fragile strands of hair. That means, we keep our edges ladies! No more bald spots!

Protective styles include:

  • faux puffs at the end of your hair
  • bantu knots
  • pig tails
