Well, its’s quite simple, know your type; your hair type of course! Knowing the classification of our hairs are extremely important mainly because this knowledge allows us to know what we should and should not do.

It is as important as knowing the type of skin you have, whether dry, oily or combination. You are able to choose the right facial cleansers, moisturizers and makeup, in the same way, you will know what shampoos, conditioners and sprays work best for your hair.

Sassina offers this chart which shows the different types of hair as grouped in the wavy, coily and curly classifications.

Do you see your hair in this chart? No? Note, your length may differ from the ones in this list, but not to worry NaturallyCurly has other images in which you may spot your length.

No matter if you’re sporting a big chop or ankle-length braids, your hair matches one of the above types, 2,3 or 4 unless you have the most distinctive type 1 straight hair.

For the men who think the classifications in the chart above are not for you, rest assured you have the same hair types as women. These are:

  • Straight
  • Wavy
  • Curly
  • Coily/Kinky

Here is an image below just so you can be sure. Over the Corner also has more showing all lengths, shades and designs.

Well I have shown you what types 2 through to 4 hair looks like, now its time for numero uno. Type 1 hair is common primarily among Asian and Caucasian people. This texture usually holds moisture well, is bone-straight and is hardest to curl. A mixture of good and bad qualities depending on who is judging.

Types 2 to 4 textures however, due to the propensity of curling, even slightly, tends to lose moisture quickly. For this reason, if left unattended to or not cared for properly, will get damaged easily. The key to maintaining healthy hair for these textures especially in the winter are moisturizing, trimming/clipping split or damaged ends, more moisturizing and avoiding wash and go’s.

I know the last tip may catch you off-guard since I am a big fan of the ‘no heat’ practice. However, leaving soaking wet hair to dry on its own, allows the strands to absorb excess water, expand and break apart. I suggest using an old t-shirt or a microfiber towel that is gentle on the hair for half-drying. Also, for those who like to skip the blow dryers, diffusers are the better alternatives. They are also relatively cheap on sites such as Amazon.
