Hi ladies and gents! So this blog will be the first in a series of four blogs to be posted Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The reason I’ll be publishing in this format for this week is based on my last post Know your type! quite a few persons were able to spot their hair type but they needed more information.
I had promised the men a special edition this week but that will be posted after this series. I have not neglected you guys!
Hence, here goes an insightful discussion on type 1 hair.

Type 1 hair is categorized as straight hair and is most common among Caucasian and Asian people. This category of hair can be divided into three groups; 1A/S1a , 1B/S1b and 1C/S1c. Straight hair is often described as the shiniest hair type, it is believed to be the most manageable and the most universally fitting. The latter is a really subjective opinion. But much like any hair, type 1 hair is beautiful and can be even more attractive if it is kept healthy, however we have to become very familiar with all aspects of this hair type.
1A/S1a Hair

- This is fine, bone-straight hair from root to end, no hint of a curl nor a wave.
- Has little to no body, lays flat.
- Considered to be very easily managed and styled, however it is the hardest to achieve curls.
- Mainly found among Asian women, otherwise rare.
1B/S1b Hair

- Moderately coarse.
- More voluminous than S1a hair.
- Will remain straight if unstyled, however it can hold curls.
- Has infrequent bends along the strands, the ends tend to have a slight curl.
- Most people who have straight hair has this type
- Has more movement and texture.
- Common with people of Spanish, Asian and Indian descent.
1C/S1c Hair

- Has body and individual strands tend to be coarse.
- Slight S-shaped waves along strands
- Thickest type of straight hair so it is hardest to manage
- Easily frizzed depending on the weather.
- Has a tousled appearance when unstyled.
- Found among people of European descent.
Caring for Type 1 Hair
Each category of type 1 hair requires special treatment, however these general tips can be used for all;
- Type 1 hair is oily and retains grease so it is important to wash regularly. It is recommended that you use a non-greasy shampoo to help the natural balance of oils from the scalp. Wash hair once every 2-3 days.
- Condition. Straight hair is oily but drying the hair will only cause it to produce more sebum to over-compensate for the drying caused from excess washing. Apply conditioner close to the middle of the length of your hair and then pull down to the ends.
- Use light products that are infused with natural oils such as coconut oil. Products which do not produce a sticky residue are encouraged.
- Do not air dry. You can half-dry your hair but be sure to add a leave-in conditioner to avoid frizzing.
- Use finishing sprays to keep styles in-tact.
Special Styling Tips for Types 1A, 1B and 1C Hair
- 1A- Blow-dry hair upside down for more volume. Layer hair when styling for volume. Wash regularly. Use light spritzers and hair sprays.
- 1B- Lightly condition 2-3 times per week. Looks great in a ponytail.
- 1C- Use a sulphate-free shampoo. Apply mousse or stiff staying sprays to reduce frizzing after styling.
