Hi kings and queens, it’s November and this means 2019 is almost over. Also, this signifies one of the driest times of the year. As a 4c queen, I cannot allow myself to be a victim of the weather so, let’s bring out all the moisturizing tricks!

I recently tried pre pooing for the third time and I was absolutely thrilled with the results. For those who don’t know pre poo/pre- shampoo is a treatment applied to the hair before shampooing and conditioning. It may be done with an oil or cream intended to protect the hair from drying chemicals in shampoos and add extra moisture to the strands.

So on my most recent wash day, I used cold-pressed, unrefined coconut oil as my pre poo treatment for the first time. I applied it to my hair 30-40 minutes before washing. I anticipated my hair being heavy and difficult to lather but surprisingly it wasn’t. There was no heaviness and although it didn’t lather as much as usual on the first application, the second time around was as expected. Even after shampooing two times, my hair felt conditioned, smooth and not at all dry! Conditioning and detangling were easy and I must say I actually enjoyed the detangling process for the first time (don’t tell anyone).

In the end, my scalp felt fresh and my hair looked and felt light, healthy and clean.
So do I think pre poo works?
- If the goal is extra moisture? Yes
- If you want to retain moisture? Yes
- If you want manageability? Yes
- If you have low porosity/always dry hair? Yes
- If you just want to give your crown some extra love? Definitely Yes
- If you want to maintain definition and volume? Yes
- If you want to reduce shrinkage? Yes
Ps. The second time I Pre pooed, I used extra virgin olive oil and I didn’t like it. Talk about excessively oily! Unrefined Coconut oil is my strongest recommendation.
What should you use?
- Unrefined Coconut Oil- preferably in it’s liquid form but a solid works just fine. I used a solid that became liquid because of the Jamaican heat.
- Regular Sulphate-free Conditioners- these make detangling so much easier. The first treatment I used.
- Jamaican Castor Oil.
- Protein
- Home remedies such as Yogurt, mayonnaise or Avocado.

I have seen people I follow religiously use these treatments so I know they work and plan to use them in future. In fact, I’ve already secured my Avocados for the next wash day.
You don’t have to use the treatments listed, if you know of any that may work better for you, go for it!
How do you pre poo?
Apply treatment to loosened hair, avoid scalp.
- Detangle if you wish. Really doesn’t matter.
- Cover with steam cap, shower cap, plastic bag, whatever you have in stock. Not a necessity.
- Let treatment sit for 30 minutes to an hour, overnight if you so desire.
- Continue your usual wash routine.
Tip. If you are into oils The Hair Routine lists some of the best ones for pre pooing.

That’s it royals. Until my next entry, continue to have healthy hair and beard days. Thank you for reading.
Take care!
I will definitely try this on my next wash day ! 👌🏼
I did avocado masque . Where I blend the raw avocado with coconut oil and then i continued with my regular wash routine and I got a similar result
