Maintaining braids, how?

Top of the day to you royals! Thank you for coming back. Today we are talking braids and how to maintain them. After all, tis’ the season for protective styles. No dry hair will be tolerated!

Whether they be natural or extensions, everybody wants their hairstyle to keep looking fresh even a few days after it was done. So how do we do that?

Personally, when I do braids solely with my own hair they tend to stay fresher for longer, anybody else?

However, if I follow the steps below, then my twists or braids with extensions still manage to look fresher than an iceberg no matter what! You should too.

Here goes:

  • Moisturize. This step is so mandatory it’s like a law. Oil your scalp at least once a week, twice if you have the time. Rub a cream moisturizer or oil along the length of the braids in a downward motion-this reduces frizz. Please use natural oils only! Mineral oils are a no-to-the-no! See this list for best suggestions please. Use a spray bottle or a bottle with a tip for best handling.
  • Cover your head. At nights or when you’re at home about to take a nap, use a head-wrap, scarf or durag to protect your hair. Bedhead is not attractive! After sitting hours to get your hair done, you don’t want a nap to ruin your style. Plus it keeps all those chemicals off your pillow and off your face! That’s another blog

  • Wash em. Yes, I said wash them. Some people think you have to take your style down before washing your hair again. Incorrect. If you’ve had braids in for two weeks are more, you are due a wash-day which will not only cleanse your hair but also spruce you up, freshen up the look. Just be sure to focus on massaging your scalp and then rinsing the shampoo and conditioner from the braids.
  • Keep that Fade or style those Edges. I know women aren’t the only one who wear braids so edges aren’t the only things to maintain. Guys, keep touching up those fades as often as you would if you didn’t have braids in, you want to stay sharp without having to spend more money and time in a salon too soon. Your barber can help with that! Those edges, will not look cute while struggling either ladies, so please lay them when they start coming loose.

But, be gentle. Constant pressure may result in loss of those precious strands, so just take your time, tying them down with a scarf can keep them fresh for at least two days.

  • Let them be! The less manipulation the better. You can style your edges and groom your fade all you want, but try to reduce the amount of times you style the braids themselves. I know you might want to wear them in a high ponytail today and a bun tomorrow but, too much pulling not only increases frizz, it may result in damage to your edges as well. Changing styles two times per week should be enough.
  • Updated tip! So I recently restyled and refreshed my braids for my latest YouTube video and the result was lovely. I was sporting passion twists for a couple of weeks, almost a month and my hair looked kinda, sorta terrible. So I got some eco styler gel, secured my edges and corn-rowed the braids to create a whole new hairstyle. You can try that too instead of taking your braids down, just put a twist on the. Check out the video on my channel to see how I achieved the look step-by-step.

So, do you have any tips on how to maintain fresher braids for longer? Let me know, I’d love to hear them!
