How are your manes and crowns holding up? Welcome to another royal care session. If you or someone you love is a natural; hair is unrelaxed, unprocessed, you NEED to have these tools and products in your arsenal.
If you recently transitioned and are getting familiar with caring for your renewed natural crown, you must have these too.
I curated this list because I’ve heard people make remarks suggesting that natural haircare is expensive, or it is tedious and there are just too many things needed to properly do it. In my opinion, that is false. Caring for your natural hair is way cheaper than caring for wigs, weaves, perms and bi-weekly relaxing sessions. Yes, you need the right tools and products but trust me the tools will last you for a long time and the products can be reused, recycled and built-on. You just need a little guidance.
So breathe, Woosah.

Let’s dive into this list:
PRODUCTS
1. Spray bottle with Water- H2O is the most important thing on this planet and our hair needs it as much as our bodies. Having just plain water in your spray bottle is convenient for hydrating your hair when styling or just refreshing. There are so many cool and practical designs to choose from so you won’t disappointed. Like these I grabbed from Google.
Some people may add some conditioner or leave-in conditioner to their spray bottles, but I would advise against doing this. You want to avoid applying too much products repeatedly, especially when your hair is not freshly washed. This could cause product build-up.
2. Castor Oil- Jamaican Black Castor Oil preferably. While some claim it doesn’t matter if the Castor Oil is clear or black, the latter has proven more effective in the opening the cuticles on the hair shaft, making it easier for absorption and moisturization.
The way the oil is extracted determines it’s color and the process of extraction for Jamaican Black Castor Oil unlike others is through roasting the castor bean. This results in an ash which speeds up the absorption process. Quicker absorption= faster moisturization. Natural hair loves hydration.
3. Coconut Oil- Extra Virgin Coconut Oil specifically is great for sealing in moisture into the hair. It also gives natural hair a youthful and healthy appearance, not to mention it smells terrific! Applying it along the shaft of the hair from root to end will help to prevent breakage and split ends.
4. Leave-in Conditioner- You may chose your favorite from whatever product line as long as it works well for you. There is no hard and fast rule as to which leave-in conditioner you should use. My advice would just be: make sure it is hydrating, softening, sulphate-free, paraben-free, made from natural ingredients and not full of fragrances.
- Shampoo and Conditioner- Of course, we know this is a given, how else would you clean your hair right? The rules for your leave-in conditioner applies here. Products free of harmful chemicals and fragrances and those that work for you, those are what you need.
TOOLS
5. Wide-toothed Comb- A big essential you don’t want to leave out of your arsenal. Common complains of naturals are that: their hair is hard to manage, it hurts and detangling is a stress. This is why wide-toothed combs are so important; they make all of this easier. They put less pressure on the hair when detangling knots, provides great grip and easy to use in the shower when you’re conditioning. If you want to check out the different designs, click this Link to see where I found these on Google.

6. Denman Brush- Tight knots? No problem, this durable and gentle brush easily gets out the smaller knots in our natural hair and works just as good in the shower. Most importantly though, unlike the sharp small-toothed combs we are used to that often stick us in the scalp, these teeth are made from a plastic-like material that do not stick or hurt.
Heard of scalp teasers? Well like I said in my most recent YouTube video, Denman brushes are the perfect dupes for these fancy massagers, the teeth feel more-or-less the the same and the soothing effect can be easily replicated. One tool, numerous uses.
7. Hair Brush- Yes your typical hair brush, however for natural hair, you want to make sure the bristles are not too hard. If your face looks like you’re in pain when brushing your hair, please throw that brush away. A Boar’s brush would be great if your hair brush just doesn’t cut it. The bristles are not too hard and not too soft either. Perfect for defining your straight, curly or wavy hairstyles.
8. Scrunchies/Hair Ties- A lot of them! Having numerous amounts of scrunchies means you never run out. After all, we always come down to only one anyways. They are very handy when you want to preserve your hair styles for bed at nighttime. In the instance of preserving braids, twists, a curly wash and go or twist-out; dividing your hair into 4-6 sections and securing them with your scrunchies before calling it a night, will help your style stay fresh throughout your twist and turns.
9. Satin Bonnet/Scarf/ Head Tie- Natural hair gold right? I know your grandma may have always wrapped her hair with a satin scarf of head tie and you brushed it off as something that was just a norm. But satin scarves or ‘tie heads’ as we call them in Jamaica are perfect for natural haircare because they not only secure your hair at nights. They reduce friction from your head rubbing on your pillow, preventing breakage and product transfer from your hair to your pillowcase. Have you ever moisturized your hair the night before and by morning, your hair seems dry? Your cotton head tie may have absorbed all the product from your hair. Didn’t wrap your head? Well it’s most likely all on your pillow. Satin feels good on the skin and is even better for your hair- and your skin too, just saying.
10. Diffuser On Blow-dryer- I saved this one for last because we try avoid heat like the plague. But sometimes we just feel the need to blow-dry instead of air-dry. That’s ok, what’s not ok is using a blow-dryer without a diffuser to reduce the amount of heat touching the hair, as well as preventing the metal bars on the dryer from getting in contact with your hair itself.

When your is burnt or you see excess smoke and smell it, that is most likely because the dryer is in direct contact with you hair. A diffuser attached will prevent that and offer more protection to the hair. The detangling comb attachment is also a great alternative, instead of just waiting for the hair to dry, you can detangle at the same time.
There you have it my natural king and queen your 10 Must- Have Tools & Products For Natural Hair. Check your stores and vendors for the best ones for you, most likely you have a few of these already, if you don’t, trust that list won’t cost you too much and these are only what you need essentially.
