Cut Your Hair Off, Now What?

Can you believe 2022 is going by so quickly? The next thing you know you are reading this blog entry in 2023! Whew! Anyways, I trust you are having a great year. With all the craziness in the world, if we can control anything, let it be our hair. Today let’s get into caring for short hair.

I have been rocking a very low cut for months now and I found a few tips, changes and tricks that have been working best for my hair in this style.

Tips

The most important tip I can give is less is more. Less is more with low cuts because every product gets to the scalp as quickly as it touches the hair, with ease and little to no extra effort. This means that you can use less product hence, less waste. Losing less also means saving more. So cha ching!

It takes two. With a low cut, it really does only take two products for regular haircare, if you are the low maintenance type- some of us still like extra and that’s ok too. Realistically though, you just need a good scalp oil/treatment and a daily moisturizer. Of course, this is outside of your cleansing products such as shampoos but, for daily use or outside of the shower, you oil your scalp, moisturize your hair and voila, you’re done. If you have bleached or colored hair, a color protecting moisturizer is key. Even so, it takes two and you can take this tip to the bank!

Less manipulation. Product usage isn’t the only thing to be reduced, you will be able to devote less time to haircare. It is wise to do so as well because too much manipulation might stunt your hair growth. Talk about killing the egg before it hatches right?

Still cover your hair at nights. Simply because you have low hair doesn’t mean you should sleep on it without a bonnet or headscarf. The easiest hair to break off is short hair, as any little tension seems like a lot because there’s not much length to be manipulated.

Changes

A small change to your hair regiment that I think anyone who has a short cut has been aware of, or needs to be aware of is how you deep condition. This point doubles as both a change and a trick.

Deep condition while you shower, I promise you will need way less time and you don’t have to make a schedule for this important step. Change your habit of waiting until the weekend or when you “can be bothered” and simply wash, rinse, apply your deep conditioner and then shower. Rinsing your hair out while you’re rinsing your body off. It makes things so much easier and you can give your hair the attention it needs more frequently.

Dry your hair. With your scalp basically being exposed to the wind, air conditioning and everything else around you, you want to make sure your scalp is fully dry after a wash. A wash and go is not necessary with shorter hair as you are now more prone to achieving the look you are going for, without leaving it out to dry while you go about your day. Of course, you can still leave your products in, so it might be a bit damp due to styling but, make sure your hair is at least 80% dry before going out. This not only reduces product loss and transfer to clothing or objects you might come in contact with; it also reduces the risk of getting a cold. With the Winter season approaching, a cold is not on the list of priorities right now; we already have allergies to battle. So, dry your hair properly after each wash and then you can go.

Tricks

The first trick I learnt has to do with styling. Wash and go’s are basically non-existent for me now because of this. It is:

Caressing my head/hair in a circular motion to enhance my curls or waves. The desired result is really based on how low my hair is. The closer my hair is to my scalp, the wavier it looks. The higher it grows, the curlier it looks. So, simply applying some custard or curling crème, after drying my low cut does exactly what I’d typically look forward to from my soaking wet locs air drying when I wore wash and go’s.

If I need to mold my hair and lay my edges at the same time, another trick comes in handy since I’ve had a low cut. Using mousse. Instead of using three different products to tame my hair, I discovered the trick that mousse works on its own just fine. This is great because it is less messy than any gel and when it dries, most mousses leave a beautiful shine.

Using a skull cap. No not to make a wig, but to help with molding your hair. If you prefer using less products especially since you can now feel them as soon as you rub your head. You can use a skull cap on it’s own or under your bonnet for a couple hours or overnight to get the neat, laid look you’re going for. Trust me, when you need a haircut or just need to look refreshed, this skull cap trick comes in handy. Nobody will know what you did, but they will know you did something to hair and they will like it. Most importantly, you will like it. Let’s call it the ‘wash and mold’ instead of a wash and go!

I hope you found these tips helpful and incorporate them into your low haircare. Thanks for stopping by!
