Hairstyles Naturals Should Avoid During The Winter

You should avoid certain natural hairstyles during the winter. Before jumping into what those are, let me welcome you to today’s entry. T’is the season for caring, sharing and reading 😉

Okay, you love wearing your natural hair in various styles and showing it off so the world can see, I do too. However as the seasons and the weather changes we have to adjust our hairstyles as we do outfits. Some natural hairstyles will just do more harm than good when the weather is cold and the air is dry.

What styles should you avoid:

  • Afros. We all love a good fro. One that is hydrated, shiny and defined. But the winter weather seems to hate it, the dry air quickly sucks the moisture out and the wind just causes frizz and breaks down the definition. You will leave home with a puffy fro and 10 minutes later it will appear as bedhead. We don’t want that. Leave the fros for next season.
  • Wash And Go’s. This go-to style will just have to sit out a few months. Traditionally a ‘wash and go’ means you just wash, add your products and go with your hair still wet. I wouldn’t recommend this style during the winter because: not only are you more likely to get sick from having wet hair but you’re most likely to end up with the worst frizz of all times when your hair comes in contact with the outdoors.
  • Puffs. High puffs or low puffs, just no puffs please- sounds like a song-. Seriously though, leaving your ends out during this season is comparative to leaving them under a blow dryer set on high and on cool for hours. The dry air and cold wind will result in very bad breakage and help to cause split ends.
  • Twist Outs/ Braid Outs. I know we get some of the curliest and most defined looks from these styles but as with all the others listed before, they will only result in dry, frizzy and flat hair. You may seal the moisture in using your best oils but the weather will give you a strong fight. So keep those twists and braids in they look cute just the same.
  • Half-up, Half-downs. This hairstyle during the winter is like you showing which half of your hair you prefer the most. Why? Well because the half that’s up and wrapped in a bun is well protected while the other half is left out and to the mercy of the elements. You will notice the section that is left out will be dryer and frizzier than the next. Just put both halves in buns for now. Equality right? Lol

I think you may have gotten the idea by now, any natural hairstyle that requires leaving the hair wet, undone or not done all the way through to the ends, should be avoided during the winter.

Protective styles are the best recommendations for this season and there are so many to choose from. Or you can simply braid your hair all the way, dry it completely and use moiturizers and oils before leaving home. Avoid puffs and leave-outs and you’ll be left with great hair to rock next season.

Thank you for reading, I’ll see you next time. Have a great hair day!
